Local produce abounds

Astoria Sunday Market

It’s that time of year! Strawberry stands and farmers’ markets are popping up. Fresh berries, lettuce, kale, carrots, cucumbers, turnips – a myriad of colors and healthy options abound.

Wandering the markets is fun for families. Local musicians perform, craftspeople show their wares, food trucks offer a handy meal. Friends and tourists can visit with local farmers.

New this year is a Warrenton Farmers/Fishermen’s Market to be held at the Warrenton Marina. It joins Seaside, Cannon Beach and Astoria as a place to buy local fresh food.

Check out your local farmers’ market and load up on fruits and vegetables. For those on a limited budget, Clatsop County markets honor EBT cards, and Clatsop Community Action’s Mobile Produce Pantry offers free food on Thursdays in Astoria, Seaside and Warrenton.

Research shows a diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer. http://bit.ly/W2Wharvard

The North Coast Food Web says, “Eat the rainbow,” a phrase that researchers tout as promoting optimal health. The American Heart Association says “the best way to get all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients you need is to eat a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables.” http://bit.ly/W2Wheart

The Way to Wellville and its sponsor, the Columbia Pacific Coordinated Care Organization encourage healthy eating and activities.
